Thousands of Mornings is a varied collection of poetry and photography. "Thousands of Mornings" is the first poem in the collection, written when Amanda Leigh was 20. The poems range from things she wrote at the age of 12 to the age of 20. Horses, family, friends, love. And then when she started experimenting a bit more with her poetry she wrote a couple of poems in dual point of view; "Broken Boys" and "Long Distance Call". The photography ranges from age 17 to age 20. If you asked Amanda to pick one theme for this collection she doesn't think that she could put her finger on it. It is a collection about love, faith, friends, family, hope, nature and dreams. It is about our Thousands of Mornings and how we should cherish them.

Emma was unloved from the moment she was born. Her earliest memory is being severely beaten by her father, Pepper Murphy, when she was eight-years-old. Seething with resentment over the sacrifice of his dreams for a woman he cares little about and children he never wanted, Pepper chooses to blame his oldest daughter. Her mother, Valerie, makes matters worse with her verbal abuse, leaving Emma isolated with a man that had no boundaries in punishing his daughter, taking his abuse to unimaginable levels.

Emma's father's coldblooded beatings and the ultimate abuse to which he subjects her, lays the foundation of the person she becomes. As she matures into a resourceful teenager, she is unwilling and unable to stifle her desire for revenge. Reaching her breaking point she can no longer control the impulse to fight back and finally takes matters into her own hands.

Having learned the art of hatred from her father and the mastery of manipulation from her mother, young Emma now sets out to make a better life for herself, leaving the memory of the abused child she had once been behind her. Hardened by the heartless brutality she encounters and the dangerous situations she must overcome in the course of her journey, she faces every challenge that comes her way in her quest for a normal life for herself and for those she loves.

Finally a person emerges from within that guides her toward a better life until she learns of a secret that sets her on the path of ultimate redemption.

Alessa is just seven years old when her uncle rapes her for the first time. As the years pass, his sexual appetite becomes more voracious and his perversion more twisted, until the abuse has become almost a daily ritual, with the unspoken involvement of the girl's mother.

At the age of sixteen, after the death of her only friend, Alessa finds herself at the mercy of her real-life monster, with no relief in sight. She flees her home to escape this hell, only to find herself descending into a more dangerous one. Alone and helpless in the streets of North Philadelphia, she encounters more human predators who want to take over her life and devour her. About to hit rock bottom, Alessa manages to break away from her new tormentors and finds refuge in a shelter for homeless and abused women.

Wherever she goes, however, trouble keeps seeking her out, until she meets three people who change the course of her life forever. Though Alessa's bittersweet journey is perpetually fraught with challenges, she does, nevertheless, manage to find fleeting moments of joy along the way. But as she begins to settle down, a ghost from the past comes to haunt her again, threatening to destroy the very foundation of her small world and plunging her back into an abyss of despair, until she makes her final bid for escape.

Sheila Hall of Fireside Press

Times are tough in this economy, both above and below the water and our neighbors from the sea have come to America looking for the same opportunities as so many have in the past. Cephalopods in a cellulite world, just trying to earn a living like the rest of us. Is it any wonder that they might find themselves in a line of work that is more tailor made to their unique tentacle titillations? The Squid Whores of the Fulton Fish Market, by Charie D. La Marr, follows such a group. Along with their pimp, Cal Amari, and various other aquatic support, these squids are out to get paid one way or another.

This has to be one of the most unique novellas I have ever had the pleasure of reading. A hard-hitting drama of deprivation and desires in the bizarre lives of squids working the streets of New York. From the downtrodden to the elite, no one is spared the allure of sea and its bounties - not even the detective intent on busting this case wide open. The reader is privy to several sets of POV’s, like many smaller stories all rolled into one grand tale. My personal favorites are the stories of Dee Paulson and Troy. You will understand once you read them.

That being said, this is not a book for the faint of heart. It is grotesquely beautiful in its prose; grabbing your attention and holding on for dear life while the rest of the tentacles rob you blind. La Marr is an astonishing author of the absurd and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. I recommend this book to anyone that loves a good Bizarro.

Thoughts careening out of control, the squids have taken the wheel. So sit back and relax, Circe and her fellow whores know just what to do.

Bumping Noses and Cherry Pie is a book of short stories in a brand new genre—Circuspunk. It contains 26 stories about the circus, carnivals, sideshows, midways and fairs featuring clowns, magicians, freaks, carnies and the crazy cast of characters that go along with them.

“This ain't your mama's roller coaster ride! That is unless your mama does acid before hitting the amusement park!” says Mimi Williams, author of Beautiful Monster.

“Hate clowns or love them, you are going to enjoy reading her zany and sometimes poignant look at a world we both love,” adds Jim Rose of the Jim Rose Circus and author of Freaks Like Me.

This is a wild ride of stories that begins with the rape of a circus poodle by one of the show’s rescue mutts and doesn’t let up until an overweight daredevil Elvis impersonator becomes a circus stuntman—diving 35 feet into a flaming kiddie pool of water. In between, the combination of satire, splatter and the wild and wacky will have you laughing, with brief respites of stories that will touch your heart and make you think.

A professional clown for 9 years, Ms. La Marr tells it like it is, like it should be and like those of you who with clown phobia would like it to be. Put on your rubber nose, put your big shoes up on the coffee table and enjoy Bumping Noses and Cherry Pie. The first Circuspunk book ever!

Review Opportunity: Dradnats and the Metric Measurement Kids by Linda Dawson

It's just a matter of time before the United States goes metric. Did you know many industries in the U.S. have already gone metric? This book fills a gap of complete metric education for children and adults by providing an easy way to learn ALL the basic metric prefixes and supplying a metric conversion table within the book.

The table and other content of the book explain how the metrics system is based on multiplying by ten or dividing by ten. It comes with a delightful and suspenseful story using Milli, Centi, and Deci girls in the family as well as their brothers Deka, Hecto, and Kilo! As a reader, can't you just hear that the first three prefixes sound like little sisters and Deka, Hecto, and Kilo seem like big strong brothers? In the middle are the Mr. and Mrs. Meter, Mr. and Mrs. Liter, and Mr. and Mrs. Gram. As a reader, you will enter the Land of Metrica and experience the adventures of the Metric Kids! From the Milli, Centi, Deci Girls to the Deka, Hecto, and Kilo Boys, you will find they have to be very clever to escape the Giant Ogre Dradnats! (Dradnats is the U.S. system of measurement: Standard/Customary spelled backwards!)

Dradnats and the beautiful color illustrations inside are detailed and very uniquely drawn by the extremely talented and experienced illustrator, Lisa Rivard. Although Dradnats and the Metric Measurement Kids is a children's book, it will help ALL ages to understand the order of ALL the prefixes (which are lacking in standard elementary math textbooks and workbooks) and how these prefixes relate in size.

The reader will learn that instead of having to use fractions in conversions and finding a least common multiple (common denominator), metrics offers an easy solution by multiplying by ten, dividing by ten, or simply moving a decimal point to the right or to the left. This book will enable the classroom teacher to easily teach metrics and conversions to students; it will also help parents and adults to understand the metric system. This will help children in metrics homework without the need of using the computer to do the conversions for them.

The author feels this is very empowering and makes the whole system understandable. The child often cannot go to a computer to get an instant answer in conversions if faced with metric problems on a test! The author also includes a website where kids and parents can practice problems. Answers will be given to make sure the problems are done correctly. There will be easy conversion problems and more complicated conversions for the accelerated learner.

Since very few people in the United States even understand what metrics IS and fact that over 90% of the world uses it, the basic concept of the book is an introduction to this wonderful measurement system! There is the Meter which is distance/length, the Liter which is capacity/volume (and easily shown as a liquid), and Gram mass/weight. Companies across the world want U.S. products in metric. We want our children to excel in math and science, and careers in these subjects demand knowledge of metrication.

Engineering careers are leaning strongly towards metrics. Many children's books solely about metrics are sadly outdated with their presentation style. Dradnats and the Metric Measurement Style is the answer to the question, "How can I learn about metrics in a fun way with a I will enjoy?" It's way past time for the U.S. citizens to start making the transition to this measurement system, and this is a very good first step!

On a moon bright night in the pine flatwoods of South Georgia, a faction of the Klan prowls. Hattie Hodge, a freed African slave, is pulled from her cabin. She is brutally raped and her husband hanged. Hattie is bound, then dumped into the black water of the Okefenokee Swamp along with her husband's body.

An aged Seminole medicine woman, Chechoter, witnesses the atrocity and rescues Hattie moments before the dark-skinned woman sinks into the abyss. Over the coming months, Chechoter nurtures Hattie back to health, teaching her not only the ways of the Seminole, but also the ways of black magic. Through her new-found powers, Hattie the sorceress sets out on a course of revenge and retribution that is deployed over the course of two centuries encompassing all those who betrayed her.

Dark Eye is a graphic novel with violence and language common to that era and culture. It is not for the faint of heart or for the easily offended.
